As the bloody Russian invasion of Ukraine continues unabated, as NATO members stand idly by, as the United States sends another billion dollars in aid, one wonders where the great United Nations, across the street from the Isaiah Wall is and what it is doing. As this war, now in its fourth month continues, as war crimes are committed daily, what is the UN doing? Obviously nothing. Life goes on as if nothing is happening. There are no emergency meetings of the UN Security Council in the middle of the night. There are no demands for immediate cease fires. Rather, there are only more threats from the Russian government which bitterly complains of sanctions while it cuts energy supplies to its customers who don’t follow a pro-Moscow line. They blockade shipments of Ukrainian wheat, causing hunger and starvation in much of the world, yet threaten war with Lithuania as train traffic to Kaliningrad Oblast is blocked. Again, where is the UN and its vaunted efforts for peace? Who knows the name of the Secretary General of that organization? One thing's for sure, he’s no Dag Hammarskjold.
Interestingly, a verdict was passed down on this so-called United Nations on August 10, 1962, in West Branch, Iowa- of all places. On that day, former President Herbert Hoover spoke at the dedication of the Hoover Presidential Library. Mr. Hoover called for a ”Council of Free Nations” to supplement the UN as it was too weak to effect peace in the world. Mr. Hoover said: “The UN has failed to give us even a remote hope of lasting peace. Instead it adds to the danger of wars which now surround us”.
These words, said almost sixty years ago, ring louder and truer today than ever before. With Russia and the People’s Republic of China holding veto power in the UN Security Council, the UN has become powerless and worthless. The UN is finished. It is of no use. It is time for nations who believe in freedom to support a new organization, a Council of Free Nations, and work together to establish freedom in the world. The UN, a noble idea: is dead. The League of Nations was also a noble idea but was an abject failure. Humanity deserves better than this flawed tourist attraction on the East River. Let it die the natural death it must and let us move forward with an organization that can stand for peace and freedom in the world. The times demand it now more than ever before.
