As the presidential and other elections move into high gear, the airwaves are bombarding the public with continuous, monotonous ads promising the voters anything and everything they may have ever dreamed of. Proposed gifts to the voters are fantastic. No more taxes on tips, no tax on social security payments, $6,000 grants to anyone having a baby, $25,000 grants to first time home buyers, new attempts to forgive student loans, rapid pathways to citizenship for illegal migrants and the endless list goes on and on. Yet, the national debt is over $35 trillion, debt service is now the main expense of the federal government even exceeding defense spending. The candidates, when asked how they would finance these bribes to various voter segments can do little but smile, laugh and talk in glittering generalities about how paradise is just around the corner, if only you vote for “me”.
Years ago, I asked my father who was the best president in his lifetime. He unhesitatingly answered “Calvin Coolidge”. I asked him why and he gave me a simple yet profound answer. There was peace and prosperity. As you think about those words, what more do voters want? During the decade of the 1920s, the American economy grew about 7% annually and the unemployment rate was approximately 2%. American soldiers were at home. There was no war involving America. What more could we want? There was peace and prosperity. How does that sound?
It’s time for our candidates for national and state office to get real. Americans want peace. They don’t want their sons and daughters fighting in foreign wars that foreign boys and girls don’t want to fight, leaving the bleeding and dying to Americans. Americans want prosperity. It is almost impossible for American consumers to purchase American made products as our leaders worry about the world economy instead of our economy at home. Bring manufacturing back to our shores and let Americans have good, meaningful high paying jobs. Americans deserve prosperity.
Candidates, hear the voters! Stop trying to save the world. That isn’t your job. Save America! That’s your imperative and our’s too. That’s what the American voter needs. Candidates! All elections are important. Can you deliver for America? You must.
